2,9-Dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline is very famous as colorimetric indicator, highly selective for copper(II) so that named as  is also named as 4,7-Diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; 1,10-Bathophenanthroline; 4,7-Diphenyl-1,10-diazaphenanthroline, which is known for its use as colorimetric indicators for many transition metals. Bathophenanthroline proved to be highly selective for iron(II). The resulting complex, Fe(bathophenanthroline)2+ has a red color.

Bathophenanthroline has also been widely studied as electron transporting material for OLED ( organic light emitting diode), and shown very good stability.
