4,7-Dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline is a modified 1,10-phenanthroline derivative substituted at 4,7 positions with formula (C14H12N2), an important chelating agent for a number of metal ions. 4,7-Dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline is also named as 4,7-Dimethyl-o-phenanthroline; 1,10-Phenanthroline, 4,7-dimethyl-; 4,7-Dimethyl-1,10-diazaphenanthrene, and could be dissolved in most of polar organic solvent.
4,7-Dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline can be prepared by sequential Skraup reactions (Doebner-Miller reaction/condensation) of o-nitroaniline with methyl ethyl ketone.
